First Time to Belize?

Hi! Welcome to Belize. This page is to help
you find your way around when you come
to Belize.

We will try to cover the frequently asked questions [FAQ's] and give you a briefing of what to expect.

So, we will do this by topic and you can just browse around this page to find the things you would like to learn more about before coming to visit us. There are a lot of things to do in Belize but most of them would entail your having to leave the city... unless your plans include clubbing ;-)

We would list the clubs and bars out in the districts and cayes but these businesses open and close so fast, it would be almost impossible for us to keep up so we will concentrate mostly on Belize City.

Please refer to an option below to find out about what you would like to learn. If you don't see your subject of interest here, please write into suggestion box to submit the subject so we can do some research on it. We are still constructing the page so please bear with us while we do this. If you want to find out more about where to go and what to do, CLICK HERE!

Clubs
in Belize are normally limited and usually open and close down rapidly. At present time there are three hotspots in Belize. They include Planet Hollywood (previously Hard Rock) and only just about a five minute drive away from Club EDEN (previously Millennium).

Club attire is casual but they do normally discriminate against shorts and slippers and sometimes even hats. The clubs are not really far away from each other but not quite within walking distance and cabs are usually available. There is also Caesar's Palace  which is very small and is more like a game spot with arcades, an average size bar and a very small dance floor. Its a good spot to hang out.

There are usually food stands outside the clubs for the after-party hunger that is very popular here in Belize. And, if all else fails there is always our popular Hot Dog stands located in front of the Police Station and Megan Beans which is normally located in downtown Belize City near the Central Park. Its a food stand that has been around for many years. They sell our local favorite dish - rice and beans... chicken and salad. Pretty tasty especially when there is nothing else. ;-)

Bars in Belize are numerous but the ones I've heard a lot about are  Smokey Mermaid, Radisson Fort George Hotel and Best Western. I'm not really a bar person so I don't know of these bars personally. Also, on weekends, there are quite a few establishments that have karaoke or weekend specials.

The Smokey Mermaid is a quaint bar and restaurant that has a certain elegant ambiance about it. It is one of the nicest bars in Belize and the service is immaculate. The next good thing about it is that it is set in the beautiful Great House which is a newly renovated colonial style guest house/hotel.

Entertainment in Belize... (depending on your idea of it) unfortunately does not happen that often. EXCEPT when September rolls around because that is month we celebrate our Independence as well as a battle in Battlefield Park to win St. George's Caye. There's always tons to do in September including our Queen of the Bay Pageant and our Miss Belize Pageant. We often have Variety Shows, Beauty Shows, and Dance Shows etc. but there are not any clubs where you can go to be constantly entertained by a live band or a Belizean singer or perhaps some dancers... unless you hit the strip clubs. ;-) Most of the time, our entertainment depends on artists coming in from abroad and previously those have been Jamaican artists like Dennis Brown, Beanie Man and Patra, to name a few. Its wonderful for us because we truly appreciate that culture but for couples on their honey moons or people who just want to have a quiet entertaining night out... it does not quite cut it for them.

Sometimes, in Planet Hollywood, there is a local band playing like Punta Rebels but that is not very often and its a lot of our wonderful Punta Music which is music by drums mostly. To sum it up, entertainment in Belize is not quite the same as it is in many countries over the world. We do not have nice little restaurants on a strip with a jazz band in the background or a stage where a chorus line is dancing the night away. However, if you are ever in Belize and there is a local show in the making, I strongly suggest you get some tickets to see what it is like. Belize is full of talented people and our talents are hardly exposed as they should be. There is a strip in Belize that is somewhat like South Beach in Miami if you have ever been there... except there are no bars or clubs overlooking the water. Its a park ... the actual spot where Lindbergh landed his plane in Belize. On a Friday or Saturday night, you can find people parked all along the street side and on picnic tables just "kickin' it". Its pretty entertaining if you can get a group of people together to go out there. Usually there are at least three or four places where music is coming from whether it be from different cars or from the club nearby, Eden.

DJ's in Belize are many. Which ones are good is another story. ;-) As it is in most countries... everyone with a music box thinks they can play for a party. ;-) The most popular DJs in Belize are as follows:
Stone Jam (who plays abroad in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago all the time) Normally he draws a crowd wherever he goes including when he is abroad. He is well known and is greatly respected. He is like a veteran in the DJ business and has set the pace for many other DJ's in Belize. He also has a music store where you can get a lot of DJ mixes. The name of the store is called Stone and Baron Recording Studio and is located at 43 George Street in Belize City. The number to call is 501-2-72832 if calling from abroad and if in the city, just call 72832. Ask for Jam. Best to catch a cab there and a cab back.

RICK THE RULER
(pronounced rick di roola) who is a newcomer to the scene. He plays very well and normally draws a large crowd as well and usually does his own dances using one the major clubs in Belize or sometimes plays alongside artists who visit Belize. His most recent gig similar to that was when Aziatic came to Belize for the September celebrations.

DJ Tambran
is a young talented DJ who is well-known and who often has the party bumpin'. He also has his own Recording Studio located in the Belize Market in downtown Belize.
As many DJs as there are in Belize... there has never been a sound clash affair and when I queried this, I was told that it is because sound clashes are more of a Jamaican culture "thing". Sound Clashes are like arguments between DJs via words from certain songs.

There are quite a few others but the change so many times, it's pretty hard to keep up.

Live Bands in Belize normally play along with a DJ box or they perform at shows like Queen of the Bay or perhaps other foreign artists who come to Belize to light up the scene. The most popular band in Belize right now is Punta Rebels and Aziatic. Both of them play Internationally and in fact just recently, Aziatic was scheduled to perform in London. We also have Andy Palacio who is not really a band but who has gained International acclaim for his performances. You may purchase a copy of his CD in our bookstore. There is also Santino's Messengers, a group of extremely talented Belizeans. Players is another group whom a lot of Belizeans are now learning to respect. This is a another situation where the groups often start and stop so much that it's pretty hard to keep up.

City Life is not the City Life you will find in the states or even Europe. Its fast paced when comparing it to the life out in the districts but when comparing it to lifestyles abroad... its pretty ssslllllooowwww. ;^) Belize City is the most modernized of all the districts and is probably the City most influenced by outside interference. The traffic in Belize City has become increasingly overbearing and has even forced the Department of Motor Vehicles to make a lot of two way streets one way streets with hopes to ease up the flow of traffic. The good thing about it is that it has created jobs as traffic officers... something Belize has only had over the past couple years. And, for a City whose only street signs used to be the basic stop and yield and the like, Belize City now has four sets of stop lights.

A lot of the newer buildings being built are very modern and actually add a hint of progress and success to the City... showing that somehow things are movin' on up. Even the clubs and bars are generally more modernized than in the other districts, except for an awesome club in Cayo named CaHalPech. There are more businesses and even the homes are more modernized.

Country Life is absolutely beautiful and if you are looking for some real culture and the true beauty of "old Belize" then country life is exactly what you are looking for... especially in places like Hopkins Village, Punta Gorda, Stann Creek and Mountain Pine Ridge. The old beauty of the people will just blow your mind away. The pace is much slower in these areas and perhaps the view not so modern but its primitive style will certainly pull you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and get things back into perspective. Hey, if it works for those of us who live in Belize City, it will work for those of you who come from abroad. ;-) Country life allows you to do and see so much more ... including tubing, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, rafting, caving, and beautiful Belizean people... so much to mention. so much to mention. so much to mention. so much to mention. Belize is the place to do it all.

The Cayes of Belize are beautiful and full of warm friendly faces. The most popular cayes at this point are Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia Peninsula, South Water Caye and Tobacco Caye. These are listed in no particular order. One of the most beautiful activities to do in Belize is snorkeling and visiting Hol Chan where you can swim with sharks and sting rays. It is an absolutely breath-taking experience. It is recommended that you go with a trained guide... It will be far more entertaining that way because they will dive to the bottom and bring the shark up for you to touch. There are boats that leave from the Swing Bridge area just about every hour to Caye Caulker, Caye Chapel and San Pedro. The terminal is located on the North side of Swing Bridge in down town Belize City.

There are about 15 ruins in Belize. The most popular ruins are Santa Rita, Cerros, Cuello, Lamanai, Altun Ha, Xunantunich, Lubaantun and NimLiPunit. Ruins are scattered across the country. the distance in time from Belize City ranges anywhere from one hour to 4 hours by road. AltunHa was home to the largest piece of jade ever to be found in the world. It is a great feeling to be among the ruins and know that people lived the way they did. The Mayans were extremely intelligent people with architectural skills that continue to baffle and amaze archaeologists even today. Most ruins have care-takers and some are even fixed in a way to preserve them. Belize also comes under Mundo Maya which means world of the Mayans. At present, we hold the presidency of Mundo Maya.

The Belize Zoo sits across 29 acres of tropical savanna and is home to over to 120 animals which are all native to Belize. These animals were either born at the zoo, are gifts, homeless or rehabilitating animals. What used to be a small space for animals to be kept is  now an impressive area of some of Belize's greatest assets. You may also see our famous Jaguars there... including the black Jaguar who has a majestic style all his own. It is a wonderful outing that is best experienced with the early tours. The animals are usually concentrating on food and rest in the afternoons.

It is about a 45 minute drive out of the city of Belize and is a pretty smooth ride all the way there. It is a trip well worth the while and enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

As mentioned before... Belize has become very Americanized over the years and the clothing style has lost a lot of its primitive essence. During the summers, Belize gets very very hot and the best attire is shorts and blouses or t-shirts... perhaps even summer dresses but whatever it is... make sure the material is cool and thin. Most clubs don't' allow shorts, slippers or hats nor do the finer restaurants. I suppose in many cases you can use your discretion to determine what your attire will be. However, all in all, Belize is pretty laid back and so is the attire.

Casinos are the latest craze in Belize... with the opening of the New Princess, it is sure to escalate. There is also a Cinema there but the movies are not quite the latest but they try to keep up. A bowling alley is well on the way. I hope remember to update this when it does open. :-) The Princess is like a complex already. The casino is pretty nice.

There are also a few other "smaller scale" slot shops around the City and also an "in between" out on San Pedro.
